This month we have been learning about early American settlers. We have read about Squanto and how he helped the Pilgrims. We have also learned about how things are different for us today than things were for the settlers.

This month's unit from Unique Learning Systems has focused on rules and laws. Everyone has rules they have to follow, but learning the right rule for the right place is hard! The rules for PE are very different from the rules in the classroom. We have been learning about why we have rules, why it is important for us to follow the rules, and what happens if we don't follow rules. In Follow the Rules, Emily!, the students read about a little girl who has trouble at the beginning of the school year knowing what the rules are. The students learned to tell her, "Follow the Rules, Emily!" We also read What if Everybody Did That? by Ellen Javernick. This story talks about one boy who learns that just one person breaking a rule can lead to big trouble, because then everybody thinks they can do it. We talked about what some good rules are like throwing trash in a trash can instead of out the car window. We then completed a "Thumbs Up/ Thumbs Down" Activity.
This month the kids have really enjoyed learning about the rain forest habitat, the animals that live there, and why it's important to save our rain forests for future generations. We will be winding up our vines, packing up some of our animals and beginning our September unit on Rules at School and Home. This unit will focus on why we have rules and how we can learn better when we follow rules. This is our bulletin board that we have been adding to throughout the month. My students are learning about animals that live in the rain forest and about their habitat. We have followed directions to make bromeliads, tree frogs, and jaguars. We made pattern snakes and are using technology to make
