Hello, my name is Shannon Curtis. A little about myself first, I am married to a wonderful man and we just celebrated our 11th anniversary. We have 5 children and all but one have graduated from high school. I have one daughter, Maggie, who attends Sonoraville High School and marches in the band. My next oldest daughter, Sarah, is just beginning college at my Alma Mater- Jacksonville State University in Alabama, where I received my Bachelor's Degree in English. My youngest son, Dustin, is attending my other Alma Mater, the University of West GA where I received my certification in Special Education. My two oldest sons are both out in the world working and taking care of themselves. I am a Georgian, born and raised and can't think of anywhere else I would rather be!
This will be my ninth year teaching children with special needs and my eighth year here at Belwood teaching students with special needs. My class is a Self- Contained classroom. Teaching children with Special Needs is my passion and I strive to learn more and learn more to make myself a better teacher.
I am a Highly Qualified Special Education Teacher. My certification areas include: Special Education Behavior Disorders, Learning Disorders, General Curriculum, and Reading (Pre-K-12th Grade), as well as Special Education Language Arts, Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies (Pre-K- 8th Grade Cognitive Level). The Paraprofessionals that work in our classroom Jami Patterson and Charity Schild are both Highly Qualified Paraprofessionals and hold certificates as Paraprofessionals.
Usually, the first few weeks are difficult for our children due to adjusting to a new schedule, getting schedules worked out, and having to do work again. Our classroom is located in room 83 and the sensory room will be located in room 59.
We will have a snack time every day. We will need your help in providing snacks for our students. We will need boxes of cookies, crackers, fruit snacks, cheese- its, etc. continuously throughout the school year. Snack time is a time to work on communication skills and we usually have a short sensory break after snack.
Through the last two school years, we have implemented a Peer Buddy program. This is a program in which students from 4th grade and 5th grade classes come in to our classroom during their specials classes to interact, play, and pose as good role models for social skills. It has been highly effective and we plan on continuing this program. I will send home paperwork about peer buddies soon as we will want to get started as soon as possible.
If you have any questions throughout the year, feel free to contact me. E-mail: [email protected], School phone: 706-629-9547,
